SHAWNEE CITY COUNCIL MEETING
September 22, 2025
You can stream the full City Council meeting at the link below! If you don't have time to watch, here's my quick recap. Councilmembers Burchfield was absent.
The main topic of conversation at tonight’s meeting was the 51st Street Improvement Project from Quivira to Black Swan. The council weighed several options with various road widths; some included bike lanes and some did not. Four members of the public spoke, all concerned about the overall street width both because they want traffic calming, and to reduce the right of way land that would need to be taken. Councilmember Gillette expressed an interest in combining a few options to narrow the car lanes, the bike lanes, the sidewalk, and the green space to take as little space as possible from adjacent residents while ensuring those components are all included. Councilmember Whitted agreed, so once the two Ward 1 councilmembers were in alignment, the other councilmembers were also on board with that plan.
The governing body also heard an update from Community Development Director Kevin Manning about the K7 and 75th interchange that the council has been requesting from KDOT for a few years. He advised there is a KDOT consult on October 21 at the Great Wolf Lodge in KC. This is an open meeting where elected officials, staff members, and members of the public can attend and advocate to KDOT about the projects they want. Manning advised that the more people who show up to ask for this interchange, the more chance they have of moving the needle with KDOT.
Additionally, the Council considered the following:
Passed consent agenda (unanimous)
Approved Nik Bergstrom's appointment to the Board of Zoning Appeals (unanimous)
Authorized the issuance of general obligation bonds for 10 CIP projects (unanimous)
Reviewed bids and approved contract for office equipment for the Facilities & IT Office Remodel (unanimous)
Reviewed bids and approved contract for website hosting (unanimous)
Ratified semimonthly claims (unanimous)
I was unable to cover the council committee meeting due to issues with the live stream. If an accurate live stream link is posted, I will try to edit this post to include that!
