SHAWNEE CITY COUNCIL MEETING
August 11, 2025
You can stream the full City Council meeting at the link below! If you don't have time to watch, here's my quick recap.
Tonight’s meeting was pretty quick and there wasn’t much discussion on anything. There was an interesting informational update on some stormwater/construction projects going on so I will share those here. Next meeting is the budget public hearing and Councilmembers Kemmling and Gillette have said they are pushing to cut the mill levy again, so August 25 would be a good meeting to attend if you are so inclined!
K7 and 75th Street: Flashing signs have been installed to warn drivers of upcoming red lights.
I-435 and Midland: Project should wrap up and roads reopen sometime next week.
Shawnee Mission Parkway improvements: staff is waiting to start on this until 435 and Midland is complete, then will start on signal replacement and stormwater pipes.
Emergency Stormwater Repair at 59th and Monticello: the city has restored the pavement as a temporary repair and it should be in good shape until the permanent repair can start around October 1. The area will be closed for 3-4 weeks at that time.
Additionally, the Council considered the following:
Passed consent agenda (unanimous)
Held public hearing for the 2026 Community Development Block Grant Annual Action Plan (no vote needed)
Special Use Permit for GEB Properties to operate a classic auto sales business in a Planned Industrial zone (unanimous)
Approved 2023 ADA Transition Plan for the Parks & Rec Department (unanimous)
Approved agreement between City of Shawnee and Johnson County for shared use of EMS training facilities and equipment (unanimous)
Contract for the 2025 Crack Seal project passes unanimously (unanimous)
Approved 2026 equipment purchases for Fire, Police, Public Works, and Parks & Rec departments (unanimous)
Approved extension of the SEED agreement for Choppers Hair Salon (7-1, Kemmling in dissent)
Ratified semimonthly claims (unanimous)
There was no Council Committee meeting tonight.
