SHAWNEE CITY COUNCIL MEETING

Tonight’s meeting had two main topics of discussion. The first was rezoning for an apartment and townhome neighborhood called Rec Centric. It would be age-restricted and cater to folks who want to live a recreational lifestyle, right next to Park Lanes and Shawnee Mission Park. Overall the council was very supportive and excited about the project especially as it will be the first project in the new TIF district established in that area. There was no opposition from residents, though a representative for the B&B theater nearby spoke in support since this new neighborhood will bring people to all the businesses in that area.
The governing body also revisited the ordinance passed in 2022 allowing the sale and use of fireworks in Shawnee. Councilmember Knappen wanted to leave the ordinance in place because he believes banning fireworks won’t change people’s behaviors, and because before the ordinance he feared getting a ticket when he was using fireworks illegally. Councilmembers Burchfield, Persson, Murphy, and Rainey all supported repealing the fireworks ordinance, citing concerns about safety and environmental hazards, and many requests from constituents to consider banning fireworks again. Four members of the public spoke, all asking the city council to repeal the ordinance, sharing the above concerns and their experience that their neighbors do not follow the rules put in place since fireworks were legalized. The motion to repeal the fireworks ordinance and ban the sale and use of fireworks in Shawnee passed 7-1, with Knappen in dissent.

Rezoned land at 6040 Renner from Commercial Highway to Agricultural (unanimous)
Approved construction services agreement for the 71st and Quivira stormwater pipe replacement project (unanimous)
Approved final change orders for the Goddard & SMP and 61st & Melrose stormwater projects and 51st & Monticello and Mill Valley High School CMP projects (unanimous)
Approved auditing services contract with Gordon CPA (unanimous)
Approved Employee Engagement Survey services contract (unanimous)
Ratified semimonthly claims (unanimous)
There was no Council Committee meeting.
