You can stream the full City Council meeting at the link below! If you don't have time to watch, here's a quick recap written by a Say YES Shawnee member.
Jacklynn Walters was the only one not in attendance.
There was no business from the floor.
F. Items from the Planning Commission Meeting of March 3.
Consider an Ordinance for RZ25-01, to rezone 0.55 acres from AG (Agricultural) to R-1(Single Family Residential), located at 5910 Alden Street.
The Planning Commission recommended 7-0 that the Governing Body approve the special use permit subject to the conditions in the staff report. An Ordinance is required.
Recommendation: Consider approving an Ordinance for RZ25-01, subject to the conditions listed in the staff report.
Half the room was filled with residents from this neighborhood, 6 of them got up to speak. No-one was against this re-zoning, they just wanted to make sure that all things were considered including potential traffic issues (a thorough traffic study had previously been completed), blind spots on hills, etc.
Kurt Knappen brought up the fact that some of the streets were too narrow for two-way traffic, but City Staff confirmed that those would be widened.
Angel Stiens brought up that residents were inquiring about what the construction traffic would look like. Again, city staff confirmed that it should not be a nuisance to residents in the existing, adjacent neighborhood.
This item took about 45 minutes but at the end, it passed 7-0 to consider approving the ordinance.
All other items were very quick conversations and all passed 7-0.
Item 12 was to discuss traffic control at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Vista.
Discuss traffic control at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Vista.
Seeking consensus to direct staff on what traffic control measures should be put in place at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Vista.
Recommendation: This item is for informational purposes. Staff is seeking direction by the Governing Body. This conversation took some time but at the end, Councilmember Whitted stated her approval to put a traffic light in at this intersection and all but Kemmling and Gillette were in agreement. They felt like this would help pave the way for future growth in this neighborhood.
