SHAWNEE CITY COUNCIL MEETING

September 14, 2026

Tonight’s meeting was quite brief and was scheduled an hour early (presumably on account of the Chiefs game.) There wasn’t much discussion, though one member of the public did speak on the 70th and Oakview Pipe Repair Project with questions about how traffic flow would be handled if the road closes. Public Works Director Kevin Manning assured him the contractor would work with each impacted household directly to find a solution for their specific situation. He also explained there are routes to get emergency vehicles in and out if needed.

The governing body also heard an update about the 435 and Midland project. The timing of this project depends on KDOT since it is not a city project, but there is a possibility the project will not be finished before winter weather arrives. If that’s the case, the road would be reopened until the spring when the weather allows for the top layer of asphalt to be applied. As always, the city is focused on reducing impact to neighbors and businesses in that area. 

The Council considered the following:

• Passed consent agenda (unanimous)

• Approved rezoning ordinance for the Overlook apartments at Midland and Monticello (unanimous)

• Approved construction services contract and RPR services contract for the Larsen 65th to 67th project (unanimous)

• Approved construction contract for the Blackfish Parkway CMP Replacement Project (unanimous)

• Approved construction contract for the 70th and Oakview Pipe Repair Project (unanimous)

• Approved contract with Alliance Insurance Services for the city’s Property & Casualty insurance (unanimous)

• Ratified semimonthly claims (unanimous)

There was no Council Committee meeting.
