SHAWNEE CITY COUNCIL MEETING

Tonight, the governing body discussed the upcoming Justice Center Expansion Project. They approved an $18 million budget for the project and also the progressive design-build agreement to get started on design. This project will be funded partially by the Public Safety Sales Tax funds and the rest by bond financing. The project mostly focuses on improving the flow of the building and expanding the locker room and fitness facilities. Construction is expected to begin next summer.
The Council considered the following:
Passed consent agenda (unanimous)
Approved construction contract for the Johnson Drive & Barker Intersection Improvements Project (unanimous)
Approved engineering services agreement for the I-435 and Johnson Drive Intersection Improvements Project (unanimous)
Approved Change Order no. 4 to the contract for the 2026 Stormwater Pipe Repair Project (unanimous)
Issued $21m Taxable Industrial Revenue Bonds for the Cedarhurst of Shawnee Living Facility (unanimous)
Approved contract with Shive-Hattery for the Hot & Cold Zone implementation project for Fire Stations 72 and 74 (unanimous)
Ratified semimonthly claims (unanimous)
At Council Committee, city manager Paul Kramer and deputy city manager Lauren Grasshoff requested the committee’s feedback on the Midland Entertainment District Area Plan. The governing body has already established a TIF district to encourage investment in this area and approved the first project in the district. Now staff is looking for direction on infrastructure and development in that area. After some discussion of what they would like to see, the governing body felt that pedestrian/bike access is a top priority, as is green spaces/gathering spaces. The next step is to move forward with a consulting firm to facilitate the planning process with the area plan completed in December 2027.
